Activities
The Street Children project took place in Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand, the poorest and least literate state in India: 61% of the population lives below the poverty line and the literacy rate is just 39%.
The project, funded by the Province of Verona and carried out in collaboration with Cini, has made education and basic medical care accessible to 100 street children, aged between 8 and 14. The children who benefited from the project often presented with parasitosis and anemia, moderate or severe, which compromised their ability to learn.
The children, without family support, were given hospitality in a reception facility, where counseling, nutritional support and recovery and maintenance of health activities were carried out.
The intervention, integrated with the government activities already underway, has allowed the children to gradually reintegrate into the school system they had abandoned.
Thanks to the sponsorship of the A.C. Chievo Verona football team, Doctors for Peace has strengthened the project with the Play for Life initiative, aimed at promoting the aggregation and well-being of children through sports and team games.
A qualified physical education teacher was employed, assisted by two volunteers and an educator, sports material (games, balls, shoes, t-shirts) was provided and participation in sporting events was encouraged.
