“EDU-CARE” – Integrated support interventions for minors at risk of dropping out of school
Doctors for Peace works in partnership with the Karma Tegsum Tashi Ling Center in the implementation of the “Edu-care” project with the aim of reducing educational poverty of minors at high risk of dropping out of school and belonging to families living in conditions of social marginalization and economic hardship.
The context
School represents an important moment of life, not only because it is the place where skills and knowledge are acquired, but it is also where relationships of integration-social interaction are established. The goal is to enhance the school as a place of opportunities, not only didactic, but also of inclusive relationships and activities in the community.
Learning, experimenting, discovering one’s skills and developing one’s skills is difficult for children who live in family conditions of poverty and marginalization. The needs of children in fragile conditions require support both in the school and extracurricular context and prevent forms of discomfort such as a sense of isolation and low self-esteem.
In order to respond to needs not adequately covered by the education system, the project aims to:
– Facilitate school integration and improve the level of acquisition of skills of minors at high risk of dropping out of school without any distinction of nationality, ethnicity, culture, sex and religion, recognizing a central role for the school as a venue for curricular and extra-curricular activities for the social redemption of the individual;
– Promote educational and support paths for the learning of the Italian language for first and second generation immigrants who present greater problems in the educational field due to a language gap that, if adequately addressed, can be effectively mitigated;
– To guarantee holistic support to the families of selected minors, as the conditions of social marginalization that characterize family contexts have obvious correlations with the greater probability of dropping out of school.
– Activate educational support services in the area: in order to progressively extend the intervention, the services offered within the
of schools are also activated by reservation at other places of community aggregation (neighborhoods, districts). Are activated
school support desks, support for learning Italian for children and families, and socio-administrative support services.
Activities
Doctors for Peace offers free of charge, to the recipients of the intervention, the following socio-educational assistance services defined by the category of beneficiaries involved:
– activities specifically planned for young people;
– activities that involve both young people and families who are marginalized;
– activities aimed at the families of young beneficiaries.
This approach makes it possible to carry out activities that involve both the young person at risk of dropping out of school and the family context, with the aim of achieving an improvement of the individual starting from taking charge of both the child and the family unit.
