Health Desk of the San Bernardino Canteen and Barana Canteen
The project, carried out with Doctors for Peace’s own funds, has allowed the creation of a free health desk dedicated to economically fragile people and homeless people in Verona. The health desk is created, thanks to a team of volunteer doctors who collaborate with the Association on a weekly basis at the canteen of San Bernardino (Stradone Antonio Provolo 28) and the Friars of Barana (Via Colonnello Giovanni Fincato 35 / B), usual meeting places for the beneficiaries.
The context
In Italy, the National Health Service guarantees health care to everyone, regardless of nationality, ethnicity, religion and social class. In practice, however, this universality clashes with situations of social marginalization and economic difficulties that make it impossible to access health services for large sections of the resident population, especially the homeless population.
In Verona there are few other services that offer free health services for disadvantaged categories and for this reason it was decided to create a desk that would be added to the existing ones. It was decided to open the desk at the Convent of the Friars Minor of San Bernardino and the Soup Kitchen of the Friars of Barana as both meeting places for the most fragile sections of the population and therefore easier to use.
Activities
The health desk is open on Saturday mornings, every week, at the San Bernardino Canteen and at the Canteen of the Barana Friars on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month.
It is managed by volunteer medical staff who carry out:
- Follow-up visits
- administration of medicines
- monitoring detected disturbances
- reporting to suitable health facilities
