Project Map

The context

Doctors for Peace, in collaboration with CESVI and A.C. Chievo, has been involved in the prophylaxis, diagnosis and treatment of malaria in the rural villages of the Shan plateau.
In these areas, malaria is one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality: 3,000 cases are observed per year, of which 50-100 are fatal. Existing health services are inadequate and often unreachable by the majority of the rural population, who live in isolated villages with no connections.
Malaria control is based on a community-based health education program. It involves the microscopic diagnosis of malaria (WHO Guidelines for the treatment of malaria), the training of volunteer personnel and the distribution of pre-treated insecticide nets (ITNs Insecticide Treated Nets).

Activities

For the implementation of the activities, 383 specially trained Village Health Agents and 10 Microscopists were used, 15 fixed clinics and 6 mobile clinics, which reached 383 priority villages for a total of 40,140 families and 200,608 beneficiary people.

43,815 mosquito nets were impregnated and 33,619 LLINs (Long Lasting Incecticidal Nets) were distributed. Services for the prevention of malnutrition were also offered to the most vulnerable and weakest part of the population present in the Rural Centres targeted by the intervention.

Finally, 33 Village Health Assistants received specific training in rapid test diagnosis (RDTS) and in the treatment of malaria cases.
